VW Big Air Antwerp: Report!
What a weekend!
Hell we’re all still realising what happened. actually, what did happen?
It all started on Friday, Christophe had to organise a battle between Belgium and Holland. A real cool concept. Each nation selected 5 riders and they chose 2 riders to perform a named trick. Things started of easily with a straight jump, followed by a 180, 360, 540 and 720. The best rider scored a point for the represented nation. After this they continued with a head to head battle between each nation with a free trick.
A heavy and close battle came to an end around 22h giving Belgium the win. Thumbs up for our friends from Holland! We should do this kind of battles more often!
The day after things got serious! Competition was on! It was about to happen, the first real World Cup in our small country. Seppe, who was captured by local media whole week, finally was able to ride his own designed jump!
The level of riding rocked sky high from the beginning. Fortunately Philippe Declerck and Kevin Bronckaerts we’re able to qualify for the semi-finals, hell yeah!
Anthony was named for-runner. Unfortunately he didn’t collect the needed point to ride in the competition but he showed solid runs after his ankle surgery! C’mon lama, keep pushing it!
As from the training for the finals things got loco. Cheered by a crowd of over 16.000 people (they had to shut down the traffic on the street!) the 12 riders started their quest for gold.
Seppe opened with a cab 12, followed by his new trick: a back double 10 with nose grab. He scored high on both hits so the Belgian crew started to fly as high as he did, would it really be possible, finally?
A few moment later the crowd exploded. No rider could overturn Seppe and he took the win! Although everyone expected him to keep this victory home it was a great relief!
Hugs we’re given, tears role over our cheeks…
It’s still kicking in…
Perhaps we don’t realise it yet, perhaps we have the opportunity the do it again…
One thing is for sure….
This is the biggest thing we could ever do for snowboarding in Belgium!!
